Degree of Need

We recognize that many funders give higher priority to programs that help those with the greatest needs.  Programs with similar SROIs may not be considered equal if one serves beneficiaries with more options to improve themselves and fewer immediate needs than beneficiaries of other programs.  SMI recommends that SROI estimates be accompanied by best estimates of beneficiaries’ likely degree of need absent intervention so this information is available to inform funding decisions.  We offer to help funders or charities weight SROIs based on beneficiaries’ degree of need, where appropriate, to allow for useful comparisons of programs taking into account the circumstances and likely trajectories of beneficiaries absent intervention.
